Artist statement
Hani Kim is a visual and sound artist from South Korea, currently based in Berlin. Primarily working with oil painting, she also integrates sound and digital media to expand her expression. Over the past 12 years, she has lived in Seoul, Bern, Milan, and London, experiencing shifts in culture, society, and physical surroundings. These experiences naturally seep into her artistic themes and practice.
At the core of her work is the balance between instinct and structure. Each painting begins with spontaneous gestures that are raw, intuitive, and unfiltered. Once the initial forms emerge, she steps back to observe, bringing in a sense of structure to refine the balance and atmosphere with intention.
Beyond painting, she creates sound for her works to deepen the emotional atmosphere. She is also interested in exploring new methods, incorporating technology, light, and digital media to discover new ways of creatively expressing her artistic themes.
For her, developing a new project begins with attentive observation and deep internal processing. She documents her experiences through writing, drawing, photography, and video—collecting fragments of thoughts and emotions that later serve as the foundation for a new series. This approach helps her get closer to the most authentic voice she seeks to express.
