Connection
As Hani Kim gazed down from a plane at the glittering web of city lights, she was struck by how the world is woven from relationships. Some are formed through genuine bonds, while others arise from a sense of obligation, often blurring the lines between what is freely chosen and what is maintained out of necessity. These connections can be both beautiful and, at times, burdensome.
This reflection became the foundation for a series in which she uses acrylic ink to explore the complexity of human connections. Allowing instinct to guide her hand, she moves the brush across wet paper, embracing both spontaneity and control. Each stroke, each dot, emerges as the ink meets the surface, forming shapes that are as unpredictable as they are intentional. The lines vary—thick, thin, trembling, sharp—mirroring the delicate and often blurred boundaries within human relationships.
Through this process, she seeks to capture the dual nature of these ties—their beauty and their weight—shaped by both conscious intention and the unpredictability of chance.
